VANTAN

Vantan is the musical alias of Johanna Schlömicher, born in Salzburg and now living and working in Vienna. Her music blends poetic observations of everyday life with distorted synthesizers, bar-room piano, and raw, unconventional sounds. Moving between new wave, post-punk, and avant-garde songwriting, she creates songs that flicker somewhere between the stage and a burning trash can: gritty, lyrical, political, and tender.

Her project sounds as if Diamanda Galás were covering Kate Bush in an aging kitchen, with a rusty vocoder and a little too much Viennese dust in her lungs. The electric piano is her accomplice, her antagonist, her driving force. The sound: raw, rough, atmospheric. The lyrics: poetic, political, personal, hovering between observation and vision, fairy tale and reality check.
